Similarities in Chevy’s Truck Lineup

Chevy’s truck lineup offers something for everyone, from the off-road-ready Colorado to the mighty Silverado HD. This is one of the most popular truck lineups in the industry, thanks to its reputation for rugged dependability. While there are certainly similarities between the trucks offered, there are also differences, which is why it’s crucial you have a team well-versed in each model by your side.

Regarding similarities, when looking at our used lineup, you will find that each truck is equipped with Chevy Safety Assist, the brand’s suite of driver assistance features. This suite includes things like Automatic Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Alert, which sounds at the threat of a possible collision so you can react accordingly; if you can’t stop in time, the brakes are applied automatically. Other standard features include Front Pedestrian Braking, Following Distance Indicator, Lane Keep Assist, and IntelliBeam.

Another similarity is the included Chevy Infotainment System. Regardless of which trim level or model year you choose, all Chevy trucks in the last few years come equipped with the ability to connect to compatible phones for calls and texts, navigation, and media playback via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, as well as via Bluetooth.

Finally, all Chevy trucks are built to last, with each made from a medley of materials—including high-strength steel—to balance performance, strength, and durability. You will find aerodynamic enhancements that help to improve efficiency and performance throughout the lineup, such as the active grille shutters found on the Silverado 1500 and Silverado HD, which open and close automatically to improve airflow and minimize drag. Similarly, contoured hood and roof designs channel air smoothly over the body, reducing wind resistance.

Differences in Chevy’s Truck Lineup

While it’s good to know what you can expect from the lineup as a whole, it’s even better to know what differences you will find to help you narrow down which used option is best for you. In addition, these differences help the Chevy lineup stand out in a crowd, informing you why you should choose a used Chevy over other options you might have.

The Chevy Colorado

The Chevy Colorado is in its third generation, which debuted in 2023. Thus, the latest models have a redesigned body, an updated powertrain, and a streamlined interior that is more user-friendly. The newest Colorados are wider than the previous generation, and while the 2023 model year delivered a brand-new look both inside and out, Chevy didn’t stop there. For instance, if you want a used truck for off-roading, you might want to consider a 2024 Colorado ZR2. This trim is made for the trails, giving you 33-inch mud-terrain tires, 10.7 inches of ground clearance, and a full-locking rear differential.

Regardless of whether you’re planning to head off-road or stick to the path well-known, all Colorados from the current generation come with one of two versions of a turbocharged 2.7 inline four-cylinder engine. For example, the ZR2, Z71, and Trail Boss trims come with the TurboMax for 310 hp and 7,700 lbs of towing capacity, while the WT and LT trims have the base Turbo for 237 hp and 3,500 lbs of towing capacity.

If you’re looking at a Colorado at the tail end of the second generation, you have a lot more engine options to consider. Models from between 2020 and 2022 give you the choice of a 2.5L four-cylinder with 200 hp and 3,500 lbs of towing capacity, a 3.6L V6 with 308 hp and 7,000 lbs of towing capacity, and a 2.8L turbo-diesel four-cylinder with 181 hp and 7,700 lbs of towing capacity.

The Chevy Silverado Series

The Chevy Silverado 1500 and Silverado HD are both in their fourth generation. For the Silverado HD, the current generation started in 2020, with a facelift in 2024; the classic Silverado 1500’s fourth generation started in 2019 and received a facelift in 2022. Both Silverados offer a long list of amenities, but only newer Silverado 1500s give you the ability to drive hands-free with Super Cruise. (This available feature was added in the 2022 model year.) This is significant for many reasons, especially if you plan to use your truck for hauling a camper or boat because Chevy’s hands-free driving system is the only one of its kind that can be used while trailering.

Speaking of, both the Silverado 1500 and Silverado HD give you more than enough power for trailering. How much you can tow, as well as your engine options, changes throughout the years, though. For instance, the Silverado 2500 HD—between the years of 2020 and 2023—offers an optional 6.6L V8 diesel engine that gives you up to 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque and can tow up to 18,500 lbs. The gas-powered 6.6L V8 for those same years gives you up to 17,370 lbs of towing capacity.

If that’s not enough power, you might want to consider looking at a newer used Silverado 2500 HD, as the 2024 model year increases the towing power up to 18,700 lbs for its gas V8 and 22,430 lbs for the diesel V8; the newer Silverado 3500 HDs fare even better, able to tow 19,080 lbs and 36,000 lbs, respectively. For the Silverado 1500, the maximum towing capacity is 13,300 lbs with the 6.2L V8 or 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel; that figure has been consistent since before the 2020 model year.

Beyond towing and power, all Silverados offer, like the Colorado, off-road-specific trims. One significant difference between the Colorado and the Silverados, however, is found at the back of the truck. The Silverado 1500 and Silverado HD both offer the Multi-Flex tailgate—a game changer if you regularly use the bed for hauling. This tailgate can be utilized in six different ways, making unloading, loading, and transporting easier than ever before. Additionally, you can opt for LED cargo area and perimeter lighting and an available 120V outlet. These options can be found when looking at the 2021 model year and newer.

Finally, the Silverado 1500 and Silverado HD have cutting-edge tech for towing and connectivity. As mentioned, their connectivity tech includes the ability to connect compatible phones; however, wireless connectivity didn’t become standard until the 2024 model year for the Silverado 1500. For trucks older than 2024, you will need to connect the old-fashioned way: with cords. Additionally, all trucks from the 2020 model year and newer offer a trailering app that is integrated into the infotainment system; this lets you manage things like trailer lighting diagnostics, tire pressure monitoring, and more.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that JD Power has awarded the Silverado HD its “Heavy-Duty Truck of the Year” title from 2015 to 2024, which should reassure you that you’re making a smart investment when choosing one of these models used.
